Reading a merchant services quote without a decoder ring
Interchange, scheme fees and acquirer margin can make a quote hard to compare. Here is what each line usually means.
Start with the effective rate
Divide total processing costs by total volume for a realistic comparison. A low advertised percentage may exclude fixed charges or non-card fees.
Ask about contract terms
Check hardware rental, minimums, PCI charges, cancellation fees and how pricing changes after an introductory period.
Match the setup to the business
The cheapest quote is not always best if it lacks reliable terminals, useful reporting or responsive support during busy periods.
